On June 28 (Mon.), the 1st CRIC General Assembly for the fiscal year 2010 was held at a meeting room of the CRIC. The following two agendas were discussed at the meeting. Agenda 1:"Provisional Business and Financial Results for Fiscal Year 2009" and Agenda 2: "Election of officers". All the agendas were unanimously approved.
Regarding the second agenda, "Election of officers", the following results were reported. Mr. MIZUMURA Masahiro, now Recording Industry Association of Japan, replaced Mr. Hidetoshi HAENO as officer. After the general meeting was suspended, Mr. MIZUMURA was also chosen as vice president in the extraordinary board meeting.
The CRIC had the pleasure of Mr. KAWASE Makoto, Head of Copyrighted Works Distribution Promotion Office, Copyright Division, Agency for Cultural Affairs, his company at the general assembly. Mr. KAWASE made a closing address in the end of the general assembly. And after that, the general assembly closed without any troubles.

With the beginning of the seminar, Mr. HANDA Masao, Professor Emeritus at Aoyama Gakuin University, had a lecture titled of "Copyright Law around Our Life - Related to Japanese copyright system".
He explained how copyright system is close to our life as well as how copyright law should be in the age of internet. His easy-to-understand explanation focused on important topics of Japanese copyright system including "A case of New Year's Poetry Reading" and "A case of Japanese popular song, Ofukuro-san".
In the afternoon of the day, Mr. KITAMURA Yukio, Attorney-at-law, had a lecture titled of "Advent of "Digital book" and Structure of Copyright" after showing an educational video, "Ueto Aya's Quick Tips on Copyright". He explained how the advent of so-called "Digital book" such as built-in electronic reader like iPad has related to present copyright system. Also, he gave a detailed explanation on the question about what kind of points we should pay attention to. Participants could gain a deeper understanding.
After the seminar closed, many participants sent feedback about two lectures through questionnaires. They said that "The lecture programs were very easy-to-understand for public people.", "The lecturer pointed out copyright system in terms of business administration. It was very interesting. So I could understand so much.", and "I wish that such an efficient seminar will be held every year."

* The Copyright Seminar for General Public is held by a part of common interest fund of SARVH remuneration for Video Home Recording with the aim of enhancing awareness of copyright system.Now, the CRIC is recruiting researchers and experts who want to conduct their research on copyright and related rights at universities or research institutions abroad for the fiscal year 2011. This is a fellowship support, one of our program in cooperation with SARVH, which been provided since 2005. The aim of this fellowship support is to foster young researchers and experts who will play an important role to develop copyright and related rights with global views.
The CRIC fellowship is awarded to young researchers and experts for a period of 12 month within the fiscal year 2011 from the date of leaving Japan. The fellowship covers travel expenses, living costs, an outfit allowance and a research grant.

The Contest for Research paper on Copyright and related rights aims to encourage coming generations including researchers and administrators, who would bear the future of copyright system, to support their study, and to expect appropriate development of copyright system. This has been held every other year since 1997. This year's contest is the eighth.
All submitted research paper will be examined by the examining meeting of the contest. Great papers will be chosen by the meeting members. Contest winners will receive commendation certificates and academic grants. And the winners' research papers will be compiled into a report within the year.
Application deadline will be on March 31, 2011. We will announce winners in July this year. For more detailed information on the application, please refer to CRIC website.
